Classic Sloppy Joes with a Twist

Ingredients

  • Bread: 8 Gold Medal Bakery Hamburger Rolls
  • Sloppy Joe Mixture:
    • 2 lbs lean ground beef (85-90% lean)
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1 large onion, finely chopped
    • 1 large green bell pepper, finely diced
    • 3 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 cup ketchup
    • 1/4 cup tomato paste
    • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
    • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
    • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
    • 1 teaspoon chili powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
    • Salt and pepper to taste
    • 1/2 cup water

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes.
  4. In a bowl, combine ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper.
  5. Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet with the beef and vegetables. Stir to combine.
  6. Add water to the skillet and bring the mixture to a simmer.
  7. Reduce heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for about 10-15 minutes, or until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency. Stir occasionally.
  8. While the mixture is simmering, lightly toast the Gold Medal Bakery hamburger rolls.
  9. Assemble the Sloppy Joes:
  10. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom half of each toasted roll.
  11. Top with the other half of the roll.
  12. Serve the sloppy joes warm, perfect for a hearty and satisfying meal.
